The 2016 Summer Olympics was commonly known as Rio 2016. More than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees took part, including first time entrants Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team.
The host city Rio de Janeiro was announced in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rio became the first South American city ever to host the Olympic Games. I discovered an interesting fact that it was also the first summer edition to be held entirely in the host country’s winter season. The official slogan for Rio de Janeiro’s 2016 Summer Olympic Games was “Live Your Passion.”
The Copacabana Palace Hotel opened in 1923 as the first luxury hotel in South America. It quickly became a symbol of Rio that all the rich and famous flocked to. The impressive history of the world famous Copacabana Palace Hotel made it easy to see why the pitch to the International Olympic Committee for Rio as a host city was delivered at this very hotel. This iconic hotel overlooking Copacabana Beach is a 97-year-old landmark of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Copacabana Stadium, also known as the Beach Volleyball Arena, was a temporary stadium located on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that hosted the beach volleyball competition of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The Maracana Stadium became world-famous when served as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
The stadium was named after the Rio Maracana, a now canalized river in Rio de Janeiro. It was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. The venue has seen attendances of 150,000 or more at 26 occasions. The Maracana Stadium is mainly used for football matches between the major football clubs. It has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events.
Hilderaldo Luiz Bellini was the captain of Brazil’s national team during the 1958 World Cup when Brazil won its first FIFA World cup title with a 5-2 victory over the host team, Sweden. After the victory, Bellini raised the trophy high above his head. This gesture not only was emulated by countless football players but also was memorialized in a statue of Bellini outside Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium. Today, this statue proudly stands and greets visitors from around the globe.
Rio 2016 has been an extraordinarily successful Olympic Games. It helped the city of Rio de Janeiro and the country of Brazil to achieve record tourism figures. Many visitors commented, “If there is one place where fun and sport come together, it is Rio.” During my visit to Rio de Janeiro, I could clearly see how the people of Rio were living their passion every day.
