Discovering Muroran, Japan

Wendy Yeh

The city of Moruran was founded in 1872. It is one of the major cities in Hokkaido, Japan, and the capital city of Iburi subprefecture. The name of Hokkaido literally means “Northern Sea Circuit.” Hokkaido Province comprises around one-fifth of Japan’s total land area.
As soon as I dreamed up a travel plan to visit Muroran in Japan, I started to live each day with anticipation until I have actually arrived in this town. I wanted my trip to expand my life experience and broaden my mind.
The planning of my travel is the best part of the trip. I love the thrill of singling out a destination, and then picturing myself already there. I now have some place to look forward to. Before departure, I read as much as I can about where I am going.
There is no better way to take in the sights and sounds of Muroran’s cityscape than by strolling through the streets of Muroran. I delighted in a picturesque walk in the natural beauty of this city.
Downtown Muroran is split into four districts. The Etomo-Syukuzu District attracts visitors to a hot spring, an aquarium, and several souvenir shops. The Chuo (central) District has cafes, restaurants, and a bustling shopping street. The Wanishi District offers a busy shopping center, the Bolta Factory that makes nuts and bolts, and a grocery store. The Higashi-machi District also has a shopping center, a supermarket, and several clothing stores.
In 2015, the city of Knoxville in Tennessee hosted a delegation from its sister city of Muroran, Japan. On behalf of the residents in Knoxville, Mayor Madeline Rogero, welcomed the guests from Japan. The guests included the city’s Mayor Takeshi Aoyama and 12 students from a Muroran middle school. While in town, they visited the Sunshpere, Knoxville Zoo, the University of Tennessee, and their city’s namesake road, Muroran Drive.
Muroran City Mayor Takeshi Aoyama and Knoxville City Mayor Madeline Rogero met again in 2017 when they were attending the ATPF (the Asia Trade Promotion Forum) CEO Meeting in Toyako Town, Hokkaido, in Japan.
The 2017 ATPF CEO Meeting provided a platform for lively discussions on a wide range of topics, such as ways to promote free trade and investment with focusing on human resource development. Representatives from twenty countries and regions were invited to participate. They included China, Taiwan, India, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao, Sri Lanka, Australia and others.
To visit Muroran, Japan, was to embark on a transpacific journey. The seemingly endless possibilities and options available provided me with refreshing and relaxing moments while enveloped by the serenity of the place. I was sure that this wonderful trip would offer immense joy along the way, and Muroran did not disappoint.
