成語：美輪美奐（MEI LUN MEI HUAN）: What a tall and magnificent building!, It’s really beautiful and splendid.
出處：禮記，檀弓篇。
釋義：形容或讚美一個建築物高大宏偉。亦用來祝賀別人的新居落成或豪華遊輪。但是，是真心祝賀，不含諷刺。
故事：輪是高大的意思；奐是眾多的意思。美輪美奐比喻建築物的高大宏偉，美麗精巧。
春秋時代，晉國有個大夫名趙武，是一個很聰明能幹的人。在晉平公時，他被任命為正卿。由於趙武進用有道德有學問的人為國家服務，所以晉國的人都稱讚他善於用人。趙武對外提倡禮儀，停止用兵，所以外國對晉國都保持友善。
有一次，趙武的新居落成了，晉國的官員們都去送禮並向他祝賀。有位名張老的人向他道賀說，“美極了！它是多麼的高大宏偉呀！美極了！它的裝飾是多麼的美麗眾多呀！（原文：美哉輪焉，美哉奐焉。）”在晉國，一個高官建築一個豪宅，本來也非大事，可是，趙武地位崇高，威望懾人，他一向提倡禮儀，講求節儉，今天居然建造如此高大宏偉美麗精巧的豪宅，表示他言行不一；無怪張老祝賀他是表面的，而實際上話中含有諷刺的意味。
用法：張三乘豪華遊輪到夏威夷遊玩回來，對好友李四說，“那郵輪真是‘美輪美奐’，有20層樓高，太棒了。”
故事英譯： Chinese Lun means “tall and big”; Chinese Huan means “flourishing, multiple, and high-lightening”. The idiom “Mei Lun Mei Huan” is metaphor which indicates a building, or an article, splendid, beautiful, and magnificent.
During the Era of Spring and Autumn, there was a high-ranking courtier of Kingdom Jin, named Zhao Wu, was a wise and capable figure, and was appointed as Prime Minister by Duke Ping of Jin , the ruler. Because of selecting and using the wise men and capable ones, so Zhao Wu was praised by people of Jin that he was good of how to choosing and using talents. And he dealt with foreign states with friendship and politeness, so other states were kind and polite to Jin, and they would like to make leagues with Jin.
Once upon a time, Zhang Lao went to celebrate the completion of Zhao Wu’s building and said to Zhao Wu, “Beautiful! What a tall and magnificent building! Beautiful! How multiple and splendid the decorations are!” It shouldn’t be surprised if a high ranking official who builds a big and beautiful residence; but the position of Zhao Wu in Jin was very high, the power of him was awful, and he was always encouraging others to be frugal and economical, now unexpectedly he built such a magnificent and splendid mansion with so many fine and valuable decorations, it indicated that he was to say one thing and do another; no wonder that Zhang Lao on surface said congratulations to him but in fact in his congratulation-words the sarcasm was hidden.
