成語：奇貨可居（QI HUO KE JU）: As a rare commodity; a rare worth commodity for hoarding; rare commodities which can be hoarded for better prices—rare or precious goods which has potential value and can be controlled by the owners.
出處：史記，呂不韋傳。
釋義：有潛在價值之貨物或人才，先囤積起來或培養起來，以待將來時機來臨可以賺大錢有大用。
故事：戰國時代秦國陽翟（今河南禹縣）有個商人叫呂不韋，往來各國貿易。當他到了趙國都城邯鄲時，得悉秦國昭襄王的孫子異人正抵押在趙國當人質，被羈留在叢臺地方。當時異人的生活必需品缺乏，所以他的情況如同一個貧民。呂不韋自言自語地說，“此奇貨可居也！”他回到家裡問他父親，“耕田的利潤有幾倍？”其父親答，“十倍。”又問，“販賣珠寶呢？”“百倍。”再問，“如果支持一個人當上太子，然後當了國王，控制全國，其利潤是多少倍？”他父親笑道，“怎麼會有支持一個人作了太子，然後當上國君呢？如果真有這樣的事，其利潤則多得無可勝數。”
於是，呂不韋賄賂監管異人的趙國大夫公孫乾，由公孫乾介紹認識了異人。呂不韋私底下對異人說，他準備拿出一千金到秦國去勸說秦國太子及其寵妾華陽夫人，設法將異人救回秦國。異人當然求之不得。不久，呂不韋的計劃和遊說果然成功。異人回到秦國，華陽夫人認異人為嗣子。太子安國君叫異人改名為楚。後來，秦昭襄王及孝文王（即太子安國君）相繼去世，楚即位為莊襄王，拜呂不韋為丞相，封文信侯。
這故事來自呂不韋以一個商人如何能賺錢的觀點。當他初見異人時，把異人當作貨物，認為可以先得到手，待價而沽發一筆大財。後來果然達到了他的目的。
用法：張三4歲的孫子就會唱河南梆子，有模有樣。李四對張三說，“你有這樣的孫子，真是‘奇貨可居’也。”
故事英譯：During the Era of Warring States, there was a merchant, named Lu Bu Wei, in Yang Zhuo of Kingdom Qin (Yi County He Nan today), who often travelled to do commercial business among states. When he got to Han Dan, the capital of Kingdom Zhao, learned that the grandson of King Zhao Xiang of Kingdom Qin, named Yi Ren, was pawned as a hostage in Zhao, and was detained at Cong Tai Area. And because of being short of commodity to use, so Yi Ren’s situation had been like those of poor common persons. Lu Bu Wei murmured, “This is a rare commodity worth to hoarding!” He returned home and asked his father, “How many times of profit one gained from cultivating farmlands?” His father said, “Ten.” Bu Wei asked again, “How about the profit if one trades the jewelry business?” His father answered, “One hundred.” Lu Bu Wei continued, “If somebody was supported to ascend the post of a crowned prince, then being a king, controlling a whole country, what is the profit?”
His father laughed and said,” How can one support a man to be a crowned prince, then to be a king? If it was true, the benefit would be numerous. ”
Then Lu Bu Wei bribed the warden Gong Sun Qian, a high-ranking official of Kingdom Zhao, with a great deal of money and by the introduction of Gong Sun Qian, Lu bu Wei got to know Yi Ren. Lu told Yi Ren privately that he would go to Kingdom Qin with 1000 ounces of gold for bribing and persuading the Crowned Prince of Qin and his favorite concubine Madame Hua Yang, let you return to your native place. It was just what Yi Ren wished for. Before long, Lu Bu Wei’s scheme and effort persuasion truly got success and Yi Ren escaped to his motherland. And in their capital Xian Yang Madame Hua Yang accepted Yi Ren as her heir. In the meantime, the Crowned Prince An Guo changed Yi Ren’s name as Chu. Afterward, King Zhao Xiang and King Xiao Wen (originally the Crowned Prince) died one after another, Chu (originally Yi Ren) ascended to the crown as King Zhuang Chu, appointed Lu Bu Wei as the premier, dubbed him as Marquis Wen Xin.
The story comes from the conception that Lu Bu Wei’s view, how could a merchant be able to make money when at the beginning met Yi Ren, Lu considered Yi Ren as a goods, sought that bought him as a goods in hands first and waited opportunity of good price to sell him and could make marvelous money. Finally he really got his goal.
