成語：棟折榱崩（DONG ZHE CUI BENG）: The beams are broken and the rafters destroyed—the state is falling apart; the beam breaking and rafter falling—the country being in a stage of ruin.
出處：左傳，襄公31年。
釋義：大勢已去，無法挽回；同時，泥菩薩過江—自身難保。
故事：棟是建築物的大樑，是整個建築物之安危所繫。榱（音崔）是 屋瓦下支撐屋頂的柱子。
春秋時代，有一個叫子產（字僑如）的人，他在入仕當鄭國宰相前就有超人的見解。有一次，鄭國主政者子皮想任命一個叫尹何的人去當地方官，治理那個重要的地方。宰相子產不認為那是對的。他說，“我認為他太年輕不適任那個職位。”子皮說，“他是一個誠實的人，我喜歡他。而且他不會背叛我。最好讓他去歷練一下，同時，讓他瞭解一下做人處世的道理。”聽了子皮的話，子產不同意子皮的想法。“那是不對的。”子產說，“如果你愛一個人，你應該首先考慮對他有益。現在，你因為愛他而輕易的任命他作一個地方官，去處理政治事務，這好比叫一個絕不會用刀的人去割肉，那必然會傷害他自己。現在，你的地位如同一個大廈的棟樑，當棟樑折斷時，屋榱也要跨，我也要被壓在下麵。如果你有一段錦綢，你不會將它交給一個不會做衣服的傢夥去作練習用吧。一個國家重要職位，一個國防要地，不比一段錦綢重要而有價值的多嗎？”
子皮終於被子產說服，取消了叫尹何當地方官的任命。
這是一個很有意義的故事。
用法：公司已經“棟折榱崩”，董事長已經自身難保，如果再募股就是拖別人下水了。
故事英譯：Chinese “棟音Dong” means “main beams” of a building, which is related with security or insecurity of the building. “榱音Cui” means “rafters” of a building.
During the Era of Spring and Autumn, there was a person named Zi Chan, Styled Qiao Ru, had had a view out of a common run before he had been appointed as the premier of Kingdom Zheng. Once upon a time, Zi Pi of Zheng, the ruler, would like to appoint Mr. Yin He to be a local prefecture for governing the important place. Premier Zi Chan didn’t think that’s right. He said, “I think that he’s too young to qualify that position.” Zi Pi said, “He’s an honest man, I like him. Yet he won’t betray me. It’s better let him to practice, and in the meantime, let him understand the way how to deal with others. ” After hearing the saying of Zi Pi, Zi Chan didn’t agree with Zi Pi’s idea. “It’s not correct.” Zi Chan said, “If you love somebody, you should first consider what his benefit is. Now, because loving him that you casually appointed him to be a magistrate to manage the political affairs, that’s equal to let a guy go to cut meat, who can never be able to use a knife, that would certainly be injured himself. Now, your position is just like a main beam of a building, when the main beam was broken, the rafters would be collapsed, and I would be pressed under it. If you have a piece of brocade, you would never give it to a guy who doesn’t be able to make clothes for practicing. A national important position and a national defense area are related with our life and death, how could you let it be a piece of cloth for practicing? Isn’t it more important and more valuable than a piece of brocade?”
Zi Pi finally was persuaded by Zi Chan and accepted Zi Chan’s suggestion that cancelled the appointment of Mr. Yin He as the magistrate.
This is a significant story, which indicates that only those who are able to develop his/her forte may gain achievement, otherwise, they can’t not only make thing better but also make things worse.
