A marvelous trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, can be summed up by two words: Bucket List.
As the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh owns an awesome image of a city of tremendous significance. To discover Edinburgh, I went to some of the most exquisite, historic, and inspiring places in this spectacular city. From the natural splendor of its mountains and parks, to the rich history and dramatic beauty of ancient castles and its heroes, there really is a special place to get inspired.
Gorgeous at any time of year, Edinburgh really offers something special during every season. With its impressive architecture and surrounding woodland, it is the perfect destination for a walking tour in the heart of the city.
Our tour guide provided expert insight into Scotland’s most famous fortress, the awesome Edinburgh Castle. I listened intently to his stories of its courageous battles. Reflecting on the historical facts from the castle’s 3,000-year-old foundation to its repeated destructions, I was amazed at the enduring magnificence of this castle. No wonder many people acknowledge it as the crown jewel of Scotland.
To meander through a colorful park that Edinburgh has to offer is to celebrate Scotland’s green and pleasant land. I admire these incredibly talented landscape architects. They really changed the face of Scotland in a delightful way.
St. Giles’ Cathedral is imposing. Its dark stonework stands near the top of the Royal Mile. It is dedicated to St. Giles, the patron saint of the City of Edinburgh.
The National Museum of Scotland protects Scotland’s national treasures. From the basement, I worked my way up chronologically through history from the earliest beginnings. Through Scotland’s Gaelic heritage, the impact of Christianity, and the Union with England in 1707, I understood how Scotland’s past is shaping its present and its future.
The colorful façade of Victoria Street provides a vibrant atmosphere with popular restaurants, intimate cafes, and fine cuisines that fill the air with a delicious aroma.
When I was visiting Edinburgh, it was a bit cold and very windy. The hills had been gold and purple at dawn, but they were big and brown in the morning and had a dark shade of gray on the ridges. Some of the buildings are immense in the silence and barely illuminated by the sun, which is still weak and hidden by the clouds. Every now and then, I could hear the wind whispering through the streets.
It was very nice to get warmed up with a big bowl of hearty soup and some freshly baked bread with appetizing cheese. I understood that there is always unpredictability in life, but staying engaged with life is in our control.
When I was standing on top of the glorious Calton Hill, I saw the beginning of the Edinburgh sky, and imagined how big and how wide the world really was.
