Joyful Memories: Honolulu (2)

Wendy Yeh

Every destination has its iconic locations that are simply a must-see for visitors. I wanted to make sure that I have seen the highlights of each place I visited. This would give me the ingredients to create a rich portrait of the place I just visited.

At an early age my father encouraged me to constantly dream and often provided me with a world map. But I found out that dreaming a relaxing vacation is one thing, finding the perfect place for it is quite another. During my trips, I love to chat with other tourists I happen to meet at the place I was visiting. It was a privilege to be a part of such a fantastic, friendly, and knowledgeable group of fellow travelers.

During my stay in Honolulu, I participated in an engaging, informative, and scenic tour. I not only saw the leading sights of O’ahu, but also discovered the breadth and variety of Polynesian cultures. I met the people of Samoa, Hawaii, Marquesas, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, and Fiji through the Polynesian Cultural Center’s exhibits and demonstrations, including the outdoor Pageant of Long Canoes.

It was wonderful to have experienced the ohana (family) feeling of an authentic, backyard-style Hawaiian luau. From the enchanting call of the conch shells and the allure of an amazing sunset, I experienced the way a luau is meant to be. I got ready with excitement for a sensational evening of traditional food and dazzling live entertainment.

After the torch lighting, I watched the enticing ancient cooking method where hot coals, stones, and layers of leaves and cloth are used to steam food. My delicious, buffet-style luau dinner included a bounty of native dishes plus refreshing drinks. I also enjoyed a traditional Polynesian Show and marveled at a Samoan Fire Knife Dance. It was such a romantic setting to get up and dance under the stars, while reveling in an unforgettable evening of true aloha spirit.

I embraced an exhilarating sightseeing adventure as I had an opportunity to get close to O’ahu’s breathtaking shores, turquoise waters, lush jungle, and iconic landmarks. These must-see sights and hidden gems were all revealed themselves. Hawaii’s natural beauty flourishes via gleaming Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head volcano, cliff-lined Nu’uanu Valley rainforest and Sacred Falls. The sweeping views of the panoramic Dole pineapple plantation were remarkable.

These immersive experiences allowed me to truly come to know a city and, more importantly, the people who call that place home. I would not mind to come back to visit Honolulu again and again because it is really such an unforgettable place.
