A Coastal Paradise: Buzios, Brazil

Wendy Yeh

Amacao dos Buzios often referred to as just Buzios, is a resort town and a municipality located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to historians, Buzios meaning conches refers to large mollusk shells used as horns by local indigenous tribes as they warned of approaching Portuguese.

Buzios has its origin in a small village which was once inhabited by Indians, Portuguese, and French pirates. After exploring and settling in Brazil, the Portuguese quickly discovered the value of the sea and began fishing and diving for seashells which were in high demand. This is how Buzios got its name. Buzios is Portuguese for “diver.”

Buzios is a lovely town famous not only for its colonial historic center but also for its amazing 23 beaches and fine boutiques and restaurants. What used to be a small fishing village is now a luxury tourist resort chosen by many celebrities for their vacations. It is one of the most charming towns in Brazil.

Buzios is the best-known destination on Costa do sol, an amazing 190-mile stretch of beaches north of Rio de Janeiro. Its sunny, dry, and warm winters make it a perfect destination for people who want to escape from the winter cold from all over the world.

Though tourism has become the focus of local economic activity, fishing persists as a means of subsistence for locals.
The city’s full name, Armacao de Buzios, tells of its fishing past with “armacao” either as a fishing method or as in reference to whale ship building.

Buzio began as a quaint fishing village so there are many experienced fishermen in the area. For people who love to fish can plan on hiring a guide to find the best spots. Expect to catch snapper, anchovies, and other fish.

There are several fishing charters available in Buzios. The best captains are those who run their fishing boats out of one of the many fishing colonies in Buzios. They talk with other fishermen and learn where the best fishing spots are located. Most of these charter fishing boats also provide all the fishing equipments as well as refreshments. There is no need to bring your own fishing pole.

During my visit there, getting in touch with nature was a relaxing experience. Buzio is surrounded by green hills and turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Forest there is a kind of forest that only exists in South America with a high number of flora and fauna species living in.

Wandering along the cobblestoned streets, it is obvious just how charming this seaside town is. International visitors love its glamour and glitz with a laid back vibe. No wonder so many visitors call Buzios a coastal paradise.
