The Land Below the Wind: Sabah, Malaysia

Sabah is known as “the Land Below the Wind” because, geographically, it is below the typhoon belt. It is famed for its Mount Kinabalu, the country’s highest peak. Sabah’s ecological systems, both on land and in the sea, are havens for naturalists.
Sabah’s population is approximately 1.9 million. “Sabah” in Arabic means “morning.”
The Monarchies of Malaysia refer to the constitutional monarchy system as practiced in Malaysia. The political system of Malaysia is based on the Westminster parliamentary system in combination with features of a federation.
Juhar bin Haji Mahiruddin is the 10th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah in Malaysia. He is the Head of State for Sabah. He is elected by Seri paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong after receiving advice from the chief Minister of Saban. Under the State Constitution, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri is elected for a period of four years.
“Selamat Datang” means “Welcome” in Malaysian language. “Selamat Datang ke Sabah!” means “Welcome to Sabah!”
The first season of the American CBS reality television series “Survivor” was filmed in Sabah, Malaysia. It was set in the South China Sea on the remote Malaysian island of Pulau Tiga in the state of Sabah.
Sabah is the definition of biodiversity. With more than 8,000 species of flowering plants, 600 types of birds, and more than 200 different mammals, ecotourism often draws the visitors from all over the world. Tourists can explore this ecological wonderland in favorite spots such as the vibrant Kinabalu National Park. It is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site. The Kinabalu National Park is also the Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia. The Park boasts more than 5,000 vascular plant species and lots of fauna. It is home to approximately 90 lowland mammal species and many others.
Sabah has almost 400 islands. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park consists of five islands off the coast of Kota Kinabalu.
There are so many amazing reasons for a trip to Sabah in Malaysia. But another reason to visit Sabah is to witness and experience the cultural diversity. There are over 40 different ethnic groups reside in the state of Sabah. Each has a distinct culture and traditions. Many visitors may notice the different styles of clothes and way of life.
A short distance from Kota Kinabalu, there are long stretches of jungle, mountains, and beaches. The wooden houses and colorful architecture showed rustic beauty.
Traveling to Sabah, Malaysia, was great and sightseeing there was exciting, but after being on my feet for a whole day, all I wanted to do was a good night’s sleep before heading home.
