President Truman Little White House

Key West is located at the southernmost tip of the United States. This cool little island hideaway is closer to Havana, Cuba, than it is to Miami.
The Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida, was the winter White House for President Harry S. Truman for 175 days during 11 visits. The house is located in the Truman Annex neighborhood of Old Town, Key West.
The Harry S. Truman Little White House is one of the most historic places in Florida. It has served as the functioning White House and a Presidential retreat for six U.S. Presidents.
During the Truman visits, Cabinet members and foreign officials were regular visitors for fishing trips and poker games. President Truman visited Key West shortly after his successful 1948 re-election. Around that time, the Division Street was renamed Truman Avenue in his honor.
Many tourists came here to discover the exciting history of President Harry S. Truman in Key West. The Harry S. Truman’s Little White House Museum has become one of the most popular Key West attractions. Knowledgeable tour guides walked us through Florida’s only Presidential Museum.
Harry S. Truman was President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vice president. He became the 33rd president of the United States with the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945.
During his nearly eight years in office, Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe, and established NATO. He protected and reinforced the New Deal reforms of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In his first months in office, he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, ending World War II. His policy of communist containment started the Cold War, and he initiated U.S. involvement in the Korean War.
Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, Missouri, and died in 1972 at the age of 88 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was buried in the courtyard of the Truman Library. The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum opened in 1957 in Independence, Missouri.
After my visit to the Little White House in Key West, I had the rare opportunity to look into the life and times of President Truman. I understood the many challenges of his presidency and got a glimpse into his private life.
Though few places are more immediately recognizable than famous landmarks, the Harry S. Truman’s Little White House in Key West, Florida, has a special quality, like modern history. Getting a chance to be face-to-face with greatness inspired a combination of awe and admiration toward President Truman. Hopefully, that will feed a drive in me to work harder and try harder.
