Blue Hawaii (2)

Before I went to Hawaii the first time, I had already watched the 1961 musical film “Blue Hawaii” starring the young Elvis Presley. I also had already watched numerous episodes of the television series “Hawaii Five-O,” which not only featured crime stories, but also showcased the beauty of the Hawaiian islands. I wondered about the reason why they called Hawaii “blue” and not “red” or “yellow?”
After vacationing in Hawaii again, I discovered that using the word “blue” is the best way to describe Hawaii. I could see miles of blue skies and miles of blue waters when I was there. There is even a drink called “Blue Hawaii.” It is made with light rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and blue Curacao with a thin slice of pineapple to line the inside of the tall glass and a cherry on top as decorations.
I planned to enjoy Hawaii at a slow and relaxed pace to match the laid-back lifestyle there. During my most recent trip to Hawaii, on the night I arrived, I saw a full moon in a clear black sky, shining brightly on the foamy waves of the Pacific Ocean. The gentle reflection of the moon pierced into the dark waters, and the cool shade of moonlight caught the linings of the waves as they moved in a soothing rhythm.
The next day started as a soft, watercolor morning. I felt like I was waking up to the wonders of life and of the universe on every possible moment. Unfortunately, it turned cloudy close to noon. Even though good weather is an important ingredient for a great vacation, I decided not to allow one overcast day during my vacation here dim the luster of my terrific impression of Hawaii.
When I visited the coastline of some of the islands, it felt great to walk barefoot on the sandy shore. Marveling at the unreal blue of the Pacific Ocean, I was overwhelmed by the incredible natural beauty of the beaches and the carefree Hawaiian spirit. Later, I strolled through the immaculate parks to catch the spirit of Hawaii in its flamboyant paths.
I wanted to understand Hawaii with all its layers and textures through listening and observing. For instance, the fashion here is about trying to get a colorful piece of nature in their style. And I do love their dynamic great taste. We don’t have to become Hawaiians, but we can learn from their example how to greet life with exuberance.
To me, traveling can lead to the enchantment of the world and the attunement of self. Hawaii offered an extraordinary example of learning – imitating their free spirit as well as living in my own world. It is a perfect reconciliation of different places and time. The pictures from this trip bring a smile to my face every time I look at them and think, “I went there.”
