The Island of Enchantment: Puerto Rico

Wendy Yeh

Located in the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico formed a key part of the Spanish Empire from the early years of the exploration, conquest, and colonization of the New World.
In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico was invaded and subsequently became a possession of the United States. The Jones Act of 1917, which made Puerto Ricans U.S. citizens, paved the way for the drafting of Puerto Rico’s constitution and its approval by Congress and Puerto Rican voters in 1952.
The historic and culturally rich Puerto Rico is a perfect destination for me. It is filled with incredible nature, rich history, and fantastic food, not to mention great beaches. The island is gorgeous.
Its recent prosperity in the 1970s had bred a population explosion. According to the World Population Review, as of 2019, the population of Puerto Rico was 3,654,474. The densely populated island of Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls, and rainforest.
The vibrant culture of Puerto Rico has been greatly influenced by its history. With the blend of Taino Indians, Spanish, and African cultures, comes a melting pot of people and traditions, as well as the impact of the United States political and social exchange into every aspect of life.
Each part of the flag of Puerto Rico has its own meaning. It represents and symbolizes the island of Puerto Rico and its people. The origins of the current flag of Puerto Rico, adopted by the commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952, can be traced to 1868, when the first Puerto Rican flag, “The Revolutionary Flag of Lares.” This flag was used in the short-lived Puerto Rican revolt against Spanish rule on the island.
The three red stripes represent the blood from the brave warriors. The two white stripes represent the victory and peace that they would have after gaining independence. The white star represented the island of Puerto Rico. The blue represents the sky and blue coastal waters.
“Noche de San Juan” is one of the most widely celebrated traditions in all of Puerto Rico. As the sun sets, beaches all across Puerto Rico are crowded with people at all ages partying the night away. At the stroke of midnight, people throw themselves backwards into water. The ritual is almost like an island-wide baptism.
I see all of my travels as lifelong learning journeys for the heart and mind. It is also my personal journey of discovery. During my unforgettable trip to Puerto Rico, I immersed my self in the wonders of nature and culture. It is impossible to evade enchantment on the splendid island of Puerto Rico.
