The name of Hokkaido literally means “Northern Sea Circuit.” Hokkaido Province comprises approximately one-fifth of Japan’s total land area. Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido.
Hokkaido is the northernmost of the four main islands of Japan. It is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, the Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the east and the south.
The economic development of Hokkaido includes iron, steel, wood pulp, dairy, and fishing industries. Rice, soy, kidney beans, oats, barley, and white potatoes are its major crops.
The island of Hokkaido contains the largest coal deposits in Japan. The construction of the Seikan Tunnel, which was dug under the Tsugaru Strait in order to link Hokkaido with the main Japan island of Honshu. The project was started in 1964 and was completed in 1988.

Japan is a nation internationally acclaimed for its gardens and appreciation of the art of horticulture. This is one of the reasons why Japan is also called “the Land of the Rising Sun.” I immersed myself in Japanese culture as I visited Hokkaido’s temples, shrines, gardens, and local markets for an authentic experience of this stunning prefecture.
The skyline gains further allure from the illumination of the tall buildings at night. These skyscrapers have become unique status symbols of modern Japanese cities.
As I was strolling through this amazing place, I noticed the unique blend of ancient Japanese tradition and Western culture. I enjoyed an array of cultural and culinary activities, such as a traditional Geisha performance, a traditional tea ceremony, a delicious Kobe beef tasting, and a sake tasting. An especially artful kaiseki-style dinner, once reserved for royalty and nobility, crowned my memorable evening.
When I was in Hokkaido, I felt that I was surrounded by nature. I enjoyed a walk through a traditional Japanese garden with my local tour guide. This unique botanical garden is a place to preserve and exhibit numerous varieties of plants native to Japan. He helped me to explore this garden at length and gain a different perspective on the prefecture of Hokkaido.
Many first-time visitors thought that Japan is a country of cherry blossoms, Buddhist monks, and age-old traditions. The first-time visitors to Hokkaido are surprised to find that rock music, avant-garde fashion, and abstract painting are as popular as flower arranging or the traditional tea ceremony in Hokkaido, Japan.
There are few things I enjoy more than a hot cup of jasmine tea in an elegant garden in Hokkaido, Japan. The harmony I felt was a luxury I would consistently describe as heavenly.
