Swell with Pride:Vancouver Chinatown

Wendy Yeh

Vancouver’s natural seaport on the Pacific Ocean is a vital link in the trade between Asia, Europe, and Canada. It is the busiest and largest in Canada. Being consistently voted one of the world’s most livable cities, Vancouver boasts one of North America’s largest Chinatowns.
Vancouver is a bustling west coast city in British Columbia. It is among Canada’s most ethnically diverse cities.
Vancouver’s Hop-On Hop-Off bus has been introducing the world to Vancouver for many years. It is an easy way to discover Vancouver on a ride through the city on a route that stops at all the top attractions and scenic points of interest, including Chinatown. I was able to hop off when I was ready to go exploring and stay as long as I liked. Buses come around regularly and I could hop back on anytime.
As I was strolling through the streets of Vancouver, I discovered the beautiful Dynasty Bell. It was given to the city of Vancouver by China’s Guangzhou City. The bell rests on two cross beams memorializing the early Chinese settlers in the Vancouver region.
The Chinatown Memorial Monument is a structure created to commemorate the Chinese people’s contribution to Canada’s history, growth, vitality, and prosperity. It is located on the edge of Vancouver’s Chinatown area. The Monument is constructed of light colored rock, flanked by tow bronze statues. The bronze statues of the railway worker and the World War II veteran represent the sacrifices made by Chinese-Canadians in building a united and prosperous Canada.
In 1858, nine years after the start of the California gold rush in the United States, miners found gold along British Columbia’s Fraser River. Many Chinese joined the Canadians and Americans to search for gold, triggering a major wave of immigration.
Although the gold rush didn’t last long, many of these settlers remained in British Columbia and found work in the emerging fishing and lumber industries.
The United Chinese Community Enrichment Service Society or S.U.C.C.E.S.S., is a Canadian social services organization headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is located at the meeting point of downtown and Chinatown of Vancouver. It provides a comprehensive range of social and community services to help new immigrants and citizens overcome language and cultural barriers to become participating and contributing members of society.
In addition to the fascinating history of the city of Vancouver and the amazing view of the incredible place, my trip to Vancouver Chinatown made me feel that I have seen the most fascinating highlights of this city.
