Happy Mood Yesterday: Lahaina, Hawaii

Wendy Yeh

The West side of Maui is more developed and has more visitors. This area of the island is very beautiful with lush mountains and tropical scenery. As the second most visited spot in Maui, Lahaina is compact and crowded. On the surface, Lahaina is a popular ocean town. But under the surface of bustling businesses of restaurants and gift shops, Lahaina offers so much more.
Some people may say that commercialism caused a loss of authenticity in this historic area. But shopping, eating, drinking, and having a good time have been a central part of the attraction of Lahaina Town.
The over 40 fine art galleries in Lahaina are definitely a uniquely Lahaina touch. The fine art anchors this town to express its sophistication. It adds to the town’s cultural and historical value. When I saw colorful paintings that depict the daily life of Hawaiians; I immediately admired their charm and warmth.
Lahaina is a gorgeous town with incredible history. It was a wonderful experience to visit many sites of interest on a locally guided tour. To take in the sights and sounds of Lahaina gave me a delightful feeling. I traveled through this intriguing town visiting some of the world’s most legendary sites and learned about the enduring cultures and amazing beauty of the island of Maui.
It was an amazing experience to have participated in a rainforest waterfall hike. Due to this approximately two miles of hiking over uneven terrain with rocks, streams, and occasionally mud, I carefully put the mosquito repellent and my rain gear into my backpack. I always try to make the best of Mother Nature’s conditions.
I hiked to several waterfalls – from 10 to 40 feet high – in a valley. It was a rainforest playground of beauty and adventure. Large pools underneath each waterfall are perfect for swimmers and toe dippers alike. And there is nothing like seeing an exquisite rainbow under a Hawaiian waterfall. All of this was enhanced by our expert guides. They are all self-proclaimed naturalists. To me, they are just like walking encyclopedias in botany, geology, culture, and history.
When I travel, I like to explore and learn about new lands and people as I discover the rich culture and fascinating landscapes of the places I go to. If I could, I tried to take the road less travelled and enrich my perspective during visits to local communities.
The delicious cuisine and festive entertainment added to the sweetness of my memories of this fantastic Hawaiian trip. Whenever I reflect on my stay in Lahaina, it was like just yesterday that I was on that exquisite town. It would always lead me into a happy mood.
