Unlock the Flavors of Aomori, Japan (3)

Wendy Yeh

I always loved the aroma from warm Sake, which is a type of rice wine. In Japan, the method of heating up Sake can be dated back over 2,000 years. Aomori is blessed with cool weather and clear water. There are many varieties of richly flavored Sake made from delicious rice grown in this area, which is famous for producing one of the best varieties of rice in Japan.

Many tourists like to buy souvenirs of embroidery or lacquer ware to bring home. Koginsashi embroidery originated about 240 years ago. Poor farmers at the time developed a technique to use hemp, despite of its poor heat-retaining property, as clothing. The technique has been passed down and mastered through the generations.

Tsugaru lacquer ware was first created about 300 years ago, and it was designated a national traditional craft. Four traditional techniques have been handed down to the resent day. Hiba arborvitae is used as a raw material, and it goes through about 50 processes to be completed as lacquer ware.

Aomori Museum of Art houses and displays various artworks of local artists including Shiko Munakata and Yoshitomo Nara, and foreign artists including Picasso and Chagall. The museum has also been actively developing various cultural and artistic activities. In addition to rooms for planned exhibitions, there are also rooms for permanent collection, a theater, a workshop, a community gallery, a restaurant, and a museum gift shop. This is like an amazing time capsule of Aomori life.

The summer festivals and traditional performing arts typical of Japan have been handed down for many decades to hundreds of years. The passion of people who love their hometown is deeply fascinating. The Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of the three major festivals in Japan. This exciting festival is held in the summer. It is filled with an upbeat energy with Nebuta float figures, music, and dances.

The facilities provided for the Aomori festivals are well maintained and remain a popular place for tourists. Visitors can still experience and participate in these festivals in Aomori even during the off-season.

Aomori Prefecture has four distinctly beautiful seasons. Blessed with abundant trees and flowers, its atmosphere is uniquely enchanting. A tourism slogan proclaims, “Experience the wonder you can find only in Aomori.” My tour guide proudly told me, “I hope you will come back and visit our town again. You will fall in love with Aomori every time you visit.”

When I was visiting the city of Aomori, I wanted to get in touch with arts cultivated in Aomori and its culture, history, and legends. As a foreign visitor, I was impressed by a cultural heritage enriched and enhanced by its people. It was a unique opportunity to unlock the flavors of Aomori, Japan.
