Experience Aomori, Japan

Wendy Yeh

Located to the east of the Asian Continent, Japan consists of four major islands. They are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. There are numerous small islands around them. Aomori Prefecture is in the northernmost part of Honshu Island.

Aomori city is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture.

Aomori Prefecture’s area is 9,645 square kilometers. It is the eighth largest prefecture in Japan. Forests account for almost 70% of the entire area of the prefecture. According to the census, as of October1, 2010, Aomori Prefecture’s population was 1,373,339.

In winter, weather-beaten trees in Hakkoda transform into magnificent silver frost sculptures. There is a tour to walk through these trees that look like snow monsters. Some people like to take a hot spring bath right after this outdoor tour.

A unique landmark in Aomori is the A-shaped tower named the ASPAM Building (the Aomori Prefecture Sightseeing Products Mansion). It houses a tourist information office, gift shops, restaurants, and an observation deck that offers great views of the Mutsu Bay.

The spectacular Seiryu-ji Temple in Aomori is also named the Temple of the Blue-Green Dragon. It is a Buddhist place of worship. This temple complex, including the five-tier pagoda, was built mostly of cypress. Therefore, the interior has a lovely scent. The largest seated bronze statue of Nyorai Buddha in Japan sits in the open air outside the Seiryu-ji Temple.

Lake Towada is a double caldera lake at the top of a 400-meter-high mountain. Scenery can be enjoyed from above the lake and the observation deck through the four seasons. Lake Towada and the World Natural Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi change colors beautifully with the coming of each season.

The Iwakiyama Shrine is said to have originated in 780. In the feudal days, the Tsugaru lords professed great faith in the shrine. It was reconstructed in the early Edo Period. The carvings painted in vivid colors brought the place unexpected liveliness.

With the fourth largest number of hot springs, and the fourth largest volume of hot spring water, Aomori is known as one of the most prominent hot spring destinations in Japan. There are many hot springs with a serene atmosphere that visitors will only find in Japan, each offering spiritually healing baths.

Sannai Maruyama Site is a nationally designated historic site in Aomori City. This site is the remains of one of Japan’s largest settlements in the Jomon period of approximately 4,000 to 5,500 years ago. Visitors can experience the Japanese people’s way of life in the ancient times and the profound history.

My stay in Amori, Japan, meant a chance to experience the place. I was sure that it would make it harder to say goodbye when the trip was over. And I was right.
