Naturally Spectacular: Rome, Italy

Wendy Yeh

Colorful Trastevere in Rome is a Bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old, working-class roots. Its name translates to “Beyond the Tiber” and refers to its location on the west bank of the River Tiber. It is known for traditional and innovative restaurants, craft beer, and artisan shops.

Italy may be a country known for its wine, but the craft beer craze is in full swing here, especially in Rome.

Roma Trastevere railway station is a major railway station serving the city and commune of Rome, Italy. Opened in 1911, it forms part of the municipal railway system. It offers many destinations, including Rome Fiumicino International Airport.

A stroll around Trastevere took me away from the tourists crowds to the hidden corners of Rome. The parks and gardens are the jewels of Rome, a popular oasis for locals and visitors alike. They are like breaths of fresh air. As I wandered along its narrow cobblestone streets, those flower-filled balconies also helped me soak up the authentic atmosphere.

In Italy, pizzas are made for one. Everyone is expected to order their own pizza. I stopped by a small restaurant to order a takeaway slice of Italian sausage pizza during my strolls. Real Roman pizza is paper thin, crispy, and fresh from a wood oven. These rare opportunities provided a perfect day in Rome for me.

The Museum of Rome in Trastevere looks at city life in the 18th and 19the centuries, while the Villa Farnesina and Palazzo Corsini both present art in regal settings.

Built from 1642 to 1660, St. Ivo alla Sapienza Church in Rome is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Roman Baroque architecture. Hidden at the far end of the courtyard of the Palazzo della Sapienza, house of knowledge, which until 1935 was the seat of the University of Rome.

The palazzo now houses the Italian State Archives containing all official documents from the 9th century to the founding of the Italian Republic in1870. The University of Rome was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VII and expanded into a number of buildings.

The church was dedicated to Saint Ivo, patron saint of jurists. The architect chose a plan resembling a Star of David, which would have been recognized at the time as a Star of Solomon, symbolizing wisdom. This splendid Roman Catholic Church has attracted visitors from all over the world.

In this naturally spectacular city of Rome where ancient and modern Italy merge, the sophistication is palpable, the cuisine delectable, and the architecture monumental. I was convinced that I needed to be there to see them and feel them. This trip gave me a chance to take a close and personal look at Rome, Italy.
