A Natural Country: Uruguay (1)

Wendy Yeh

Uruguay offers endless natural scenery and historical wealth all within a short distance, which makes it a natural destination to experience nature.

Refreshing beaches, green meadows, interesting bird or whale watching, hot springs, and historical heritage centers are just some of all the things that are offered to visitors of Uruguay.

Uruguay’s Ministry of Tourism builds the Uruguay Natural Country Brand by conveying harmony, spirit, and quality of life as the values Uruguayans value.

Conservation and protection of the environment in Uruguay has some of the best sustainability indicators, recognized by numerous international organizations.

Uruguay has a mild and stable climate all year round. There are no extreme seasons or major weather events. It maintains a perfect balance of climate that is stable all year.

The national flag of Uruguay is one of the three official flags of Uruguay along with the flag of Artigas and the flag of the Treinta y Tress. It has a field of nine equal horizontal stripes alternating white and blue. The canton is white, charged with the Sun of May, from which 16 rays extend, alternating between triangular and wavy. The flag was first adopted by law in 1828.

Jose Pervasion Artigas was a national hero of Uruguay. He is revered as the father of Uruguayan nationhood. He was born in Montevideo on June 19, 1764. Artigas’s birthday is celebrated as a national holiday in Uruguay.

Throughout Uruguayan history, Artigas has been the namesake of numerous developments in Uruguay. For example, Artigas International Airport; General Artigas Bridge, which connects Paysandu, Uruguay and Colon, Argentina; Fort General Artigas, a military museum built in 1809; and the city of Artigas, capital of the Artigas Province of Uruguay.

The horizontal stripes on the flag represent the nine original departments (provinces in English) of Uruguay. The Sun of May represents the May Revolution of 1810.

I believe that food is an important part of cultural heritage. It can connect us to people and places. With international recognition, “parrilla” is the most delicious dish of Uruguayan tradition. It is made from different types of roasted meats grilled on a barbecue.

Since the seventeenth century, the custom of drinking tea in Europe has extended the habit of drinking mate tea to South America and especially to Uruguay. The most popular tea in Uruguay is called “mate.”

It is difficult to imagine a Uruguayan who does not drink mate. It is an essential part of the national culture. When I was offered a cup of hot mate, I enjoyed it with gratitude. It reminds me of the warm friendliness I felt when visiting Uruguay.
