成語：老馬識途（LAO MA SHI TU）: An old horse knows the way—the experienced and capable can lead others wisely; an old hand is a good guide; a veteran’s knowledge; an experienced man knows the ropes; sense comes with age; the devil knows many things because he is old.
出處：韓非子，說林上。
釋義：類似語：老驥伏櫪；駕輕就熟。比喻熟悉而有經驗者才能完成任務。老手比新手厲害。
故事：春秋時代，山戎國（今河南遷安縣）侵犯燕國，齊桓公帶兵去救援，打敗了山戎並佔領了他們的首都令支。山戎求孤竹國（今河北盧龍縣）派兵援助復仇。山戎和孤竹聯軍又被齊國打敗。孤竹國王搭理呵命其黃花元帥假向齊桓公投降，並以帶路追趕孤竹國王搭理呵為名，實際上要把齊軍引誘到迷宮。此處又名瀚海，是一片廣闊的沙漠，全是無垠的巨型沙丘，水草全無。且整日冷風怒作，飛沙走石；正如搭理呵預測的即使沒有戰鬥，齊軍也會死傷一半。此時，齊桓公急忙問黃花在哪裡？並派人去找黃花。可是，誰也不知道他去了哪裡。他們挨到天明，發現軍隊陷入混亂，軍隊已經陷入嚴峻的困境，官兵傷亡大半。
此時，相國管仲忽然想起一件事：老馬能夠記住牠所走過的路徑，並能回到牠原來所住的地方，不管有多遠。於是將此意見報告齊桓公，齊桓公認為可行，便叫無終國派來的大將虎兒斑挑選幾匹老馬，令牠們在部隊前面自由行走，士兵跟著牠們前進。果然經過不少彎路險道，老馬領著齊軍終於走出了迷谷。
用法：我的電腦壞了找不到一個File，自己弄了半天，不得要領；叫女婿來看一下。他摸了三兩下，一切OK, 真是“老馬識途”，不愧為電腦修理專家。
故事英譯： During the Era of Spring and Autumn, Shan Rong State (Qian An County, He Nan Province today) was invading Kingdom Yan, Duke Huan of Kingdom Qi led his troops went to rescue Yan, and defeated Shan Rong, occupied its Capital Lin Zhi. Shan Rong asked King Da Li He of Gu Zhu State for fighting against and revenging on Qi and the Union Army of Shan Rong and Gu Zhu was again defeated by Duke Huan of Qi. Da Li He, the king of Gu Zhu, created a scheme that he let his Marshal Huang Hua pretend to surrender to Kingdom Qi and would like to be the guide for looking for King Da Li He of Gu Zhu State, in fact he was inducing Duke Huan of Qi and his troops moving into a called “Maze Valley” in a vast desert, which was also called Han Hai (Dry Sea), a place with all giant dunes of sand without any vegetables and water. And there was always cold gusting like in hell and caused sands flying all over the surroundings. It was just what Da Li He had predicted that even if no combat, Qi’s men would lose half of them here. In the meantime, Duke Huan of Qi hurriedly asked where Huan Hua the guide is and sent man to look for him, anyway no one could find where he ran at all. They waited to dawn, found that the troops were in chaos and lots of soldiers damaged and died. In the meanwhile they lost the way and trapped in a dilemma that they could not find an exit at all after plunging forward on this way and dashing on another. The army of Qi had been trapped in a critical situation.
Meanwhile, Premier Guan Zhong suddenly recalled one thing: old horses had naturally the capability that they can remember the way which they had passed through and could walk along the way to the original place, no matter how far it is. Then he reported his idea to Duke Huan, and Duke Huan agreed with the it and let General Hu Er Ban whom were sent by Wu Zhong State select some old healthy horses and let themselves walk freely in front of the troops and the soldiers followed them. Truly after walking many crooked roads and precipitous ways, the horses finally led the Qi’s troops out of the maze valley.
