成語：舍舊謀新（SHE JIU MOU XIN）: to give up the old and plan the new; to discard the old and created the new; to act for practice revolution; to make an astonished progressive change.
出處：左傳。
釋義：拋棄以前的舊計劃或舊人事，建立新的事業，即所謂“革新”或“改革開放”之意。
故事：春秋時代，晉文公因為兄弟爭王位而被迫流亡國外19年。後來得到秦國的幫助才有機會回到晉國做了君主為晉文公。當時，楚國是一個強國，想自稱為王，許多小國都向楚稱臣。晉文公想稱霸諸侯，所以就開始採取行動實現他的計劃。他的第一步是恢復周襄王的王位頭銜。第二步便是秀其肌肉（展示力量）以立威諸侯。當時，恰巧晉國友邦宋國被楚國圍攻，晉文公便用侵曹伐魏的方式來替宋國解圍（曹、魏二國是楚國的保護國）。曹、魏二國很快的就被晉國佔領。楚國聞訊，立即派兵救援，同時，派特使去晉國向晉文公求情，請晉國從曹、魏二國退兵。同時，楚國也答應從宋國撤兵。晉文公卻私下裡答應曹、魏二國君主復國，但必須與楚國斷絕邦交。楚國得到消息後，楚將（王子）子玉，楚軍總司令，堅決要與晉軍打一仗。晉文公為了報答以前楚王對他的優待，自願後退90華里。但子玉逞一時之氣，堅決要與晉國作戰。晉文公非常苦悶，聽民眾說，“我們君主的德行像田野和高原的草那樣美麗茂盛，應該捨棄對楚國的舊恩而建立新的功勞。”於是，晉文公在城濮與子玉決戰，將子玉打敗，而稱霸於諸侯。

故事英譯： During the Era of Spring and Autumn, Duke Wen of Jin struggled for enthroning event with brothers and was forced by his brothers to go into exile for 19 years. Afterward, he was helped by Kingdom Qin and finally had the opportunity to return homeland to ascending the throne as Duke Wen of Jin. In the meantime Chu was a powerful nation and bestowed Duke of Chu himself as a king of Chu, and many weak small nations went to be Chu’s vassals. Duke Wen of Jin desired Jin to be the hegemony, so he began to act for practicing his plan. His first step was to help and resume the title of King Xiang of Zhou Empire. The second step was to show the muscles of Jin to vassal-states. Meanwhile it chanced to be that Dukedom Song, a leaguer of Jin, was invaded by Kingdom Chu and so Duke Wen of Jin adopted the tragedy of invading Cao and attacking Wei, both were vassals of Chu, for releasing the siege of Song. Dukedoms Cao and Wei were quickly occupied by Jin. After hearing the news, King of Chu immediately dispatched troops to rescue Cao and Wei on the one hand, and on the other he sent envoy going to Jin for asking Duke Wen of Jin to retreat his troops from Cao and Wei. At the same time Chu promised to retreat its army from Song. Meanwhile, Duke Wen of Jin agreed secretly to let the rulers of Cao and Wei to restore their states, but asked them that they had to be separated from Chu. When Chu got the news, General Zi Yu, the commander-in-chief of Chu, also the crowned-prince of Chu, insisted to start a war against Jin. Duke Wen of Jin pulled willingly his troops 90 li back for repaying the king of Chu the favor which had been done to him by King of Chu previously. General Zi Yu wanted to blast off his anger, made his mind to fight against the army of Duke Wen of Jin. The army of Jin retreated to Zhang Pu. Meanwhile Duke Wen of Jin was depressed by the saying of the public, “the virtue of our Monarch is just like the grass in the fields and high lands so beautiful and so prosperous, who should give up the old and planed the new.” Finally, Duke Wen of Jin made up his mind to engage a decisive battle against the troops of Zi Yu, and defeated Zi Yu badly.
