出處：國語，周朝左丘明著。
釋義：望之如荼，望之如火，表示軍隊陣容整齊雄壯。今天使用範圍擴大為：聲勢浩大，氣魄震驚，生機旺盛等皆可用之。
故事：春秋末期，吳國從南方崛起。吳王夫差為了和晉定公爭奪諸侯盟主頭銜，於公元前482年（周哀公13年）帶領大軍北上，到了黃池（今河南封丘縣）大會諸侯。在訂立盟約的時候，為了得到首領位置，吳王夫差和晉定公二人陷入僵局。此時吳王夫差決心顯示一下威風，以便壓迫晉定公就範。次日夜裡，吳王夫差暗地裡將他的30萬軍隊擺成三個正方形的陣容。擺當中的為中軍，中軍士兵全部穿白色衣服，白色鎧甲，拿白色旗幟，和纏有白色羽毛的弓箭。遠遠望去，好像遍野盛開的荼花。左軍紅衣服紅旗幟，望去如滿山燃燒的熊熊火焰。右軍著黑衣服黑旗幟，望去如滿天烏雲密布。次晨，吳王夫差親自指揮軍演，擊鼓鳴鐘，三軍將士，一呼齊應，那種氣勢如山崩地裂，所有的諸侯皆為之震懾。在此情況下，晉定公不得不歃血為盟，讓吳王夫差做了盟主。
用法：朝鮮的啦啦隊數百人出現在韓國昌平冬奧會上，望之“如火如荼”，聲勢浩大，氣魄震人。
故事英譯：In the last years of Spring and Autumn Era, the Kingdom Wu rose in the South of China and King Fu Chai of Kingdom Wu in order to struggle for the title of the common-lord of the alliance, led his great troops in 482 BC ( Duke Ai of Zhou 13th ) going north-bound, and reaching Huang Chi area, (Feng Qiu County He Nan Province today) joined the conference with leaders of all other kingdoms. When they set the league treaty, for getting the first place, both of Kingdom Wu and Kingdom Jin came to a deadlock. Meanwhile, King Fu Chai of Wu made a decision to show his muscles for forcing Duke Ding of Kingdom Jin to give in.
At night of the next day, King Fu Chai deployed stealthily his 30 thousand men into three square arrays evenly; all the soldiers arranged in the central array wore white clothes, white armors, holding white banners, and taking white bows and arrows which were bound with white feathers that looked like sow-thistles ( sonchus oleraceus ) spreading all over the fields. The men in left array were putting on red clothes with red banners, looking like exuberant flames burning all over the mountains. The right array of soldiers wore black clothes with black banners, looking like vast deep-dark clouds, spreading all over the sky. In the morning the next day, King Fu Chai of Wu directed personally the military exercise with drums beaten and bells knocked, and responded neatly with loud sound by all the thirty thousand soldiers. The momentum like mountains fall and earth splits shocked the whole conference participants. Under such an awful situation, Duke Ding of Jin could not but smear the blood as a sign of the oath to tie alliance with other leaders and yielded the title of leadership to King Fu Chai of Kingdom Wu.
