成語：目不見睫（MU BU JIAN JIE）: The eye cannot see the eyelashes—one doesn’t have a correct appraisal of his own ability; lack self-awareness; one usually cannot find one’s own faults or mistakes.
出處：史記，越世家。
釋義：用它來形容一個人不能看見自己的缺點或錯誤。
故事：戰國時代，越王無疆當國，他想與其他國家爭霸，便計劃侵略北邊的齊國及西邊的楚國。齊威王得到此消息後，便派一說客（特使）到越國去見越王。齊國的特使在越國見到越王時說，“如果越國不能征服楚國，我想陛下不可能稱霸，因為越國還未能稱為一個大國，同時，小國是不能稱霸的。為何陛下無法征服楚國呢？可能因為得不到晉國的支持。”
越王說，“目前我的希望是晉國能保持中立。我不想與晉國發生衝突。難道晉國會來奪取我的城池？”接著越王又分析了天下（中國）軍事情勢，他認為晉國未能趁機奪取楚國的土地十分失算。
齊國使者聽力越王的分析，說，“我覺得越國沒有亡國是十分幸運的。陛下的目光太短視了。我瞧不起那些運用智慧像使用眼球的作法。眼睛雖然能夠視物很清楚，但看不見它自己眉毛上面的睫毛。現在你只看見晉國戰略失算，卻看不見越國本身的錯誤。大王只希望晉國去奪取楚國的土地，又不願意與晉國合作；只憑希望如何能使美夢成真？不如立即派兵攻打楚國，奪取楚國長沙地方的產米區，及竟澤嶺的產木材區；然後，大王就可以建立霸王基礎了。”
越王無疆被齊國說客說服了，便放棄了攻齊，而將矛頭轉向楚國。
用法：一個人喜歡批評別人，被批評者反諷他說，“你不過是一個‘目不見睫’的人而已。”
故事英譯：During the Era of Warring States, King Wu Jiang of Yue State was the ruler and he wanted to strive with other states for being the dominator, so he was planning to invade Qi State on the north and attack Chu State on the west. After learning the information that Yue had the intension to invade Qi, King Wu of Qi sent a lobbyist (special envoy) going to Yue to see the king of Yue. The envoy of Qi reached Yue and said to King Wu Jing of Yue, “If Yue cannot conquer Chu State, I think Your Majesty would not probably be called the predominant, because that your country hadn’t been a great one，for a small state cannot be called the dominant. Why Your Majesty has not gone to conquer Chu may be due to that Jin State would not support you. ”
The king of Yue said, “Now my expectation to Jin State is that Jin State will keep attitude of neutrality. I don’t want to conflict with Jin. Is it possible that the troops of Jin would come to occupy my cities? ” Then, the king of Yue analyzed the military situation of the whole world (China), he thought that it is pitiful that Jin State hadn’t invade Chu and seized some territories from Chu. He thought that the strategy of Jin was failed. ”
After listening the king of Yue’s analysis, the lobbyist of Qi said, “I think it’s lucky that Yue State hadn’t been perished. Your Majesty’s vision is quite nearsighted. I look down those who used their wisdom as to use their eyeballs, though, their eyes can see things very clearly, but they cannot see their own eyelashes above their eyebrows. Now, Your Majesty can just see the strategic fault of Jin but cannot see Yue’s own mistakes. Your Majesty just expects Jin to go to seize some lands of Chu and you don’t want to unite with it, how can you depend your dream coming true? It’s better to send troops immediately to attack Chu, take the land of Chu at Chang Sha area in which rice grows richly and the land of Jing Ze Ling where the useful woods produced very much. Taking advantage of the opportunity Your Majesty can build the foundation of being the paramount. ” King Wu Jiang of Yue was convinced by the lobbyist of Qi, so the king of Yue gave up to attack Qi, and turned his spear-head towards Chu.
