成語：煮豆燃萁（ZHU DOU RAN QI）: to cook beans with beanstalks—fratricidal strife; originally grow together with the same root, why should the beanstalk fried the beans so rush?
出處：曹植的七步詩。
釋義：比喻兄弟相殘。
故事：三國時丞相曹操有兩個兒子：曹丕和曹植。曹植天生聰穎，十歲能文，而且寫得又好又快，因此，深深得到曹操的寵愛。曹操死後，曹丕奪取了漢朝的天下，自己做了皇帝，改國號為魏，自稱為魏文帝。曹丕妒嫉曹植的文學天才，早就想藉故殺了他。
有一次文帝曹丕強迫他弟弟曹植在七步時間內作一首詩,否則就殺了他。得到命令後，曹植開始步行，同時吟出詩句：“煮豆持作羹，漉豉以為汁；萁在釜底燃，豆在釜中泣；本是同根生，相煎何太急！”
曹植受到曹丕的壓迫，感傷兄弟相殘的殘酷，所以故意借這一首詩來諷刺他哥哥曹丕，希望他能感悟。詩中之豆和豆萁都是由同一個根生出來的一部分，比喻曹丕、曹植兄弟二人都是同母所生。不應該自相殘殺。
用法：張二和張三親兄弟為了爭財產互相殘殺。李四說，你們是親兄弟，何必為了一些身外之物而“煮豆燃萁”呢？
故事英譯：Premier Cao Cao in the period of Three Kingdoms had two sons: Cao Pi and Cao Zhi. Cao Zhi was an innate genius who could compose essays very well and nimbly at 10 years old, so was favored deeply by his father Cao Cao. After Cao Cao died, Cao Pi, Cao Cao’s elder son, seized the imperial power from Han Dynasty, ascended the throne himself as the Emperor Wen of Kingdom Wei. Cao Pi envied Cao Zhi’s literary talent earlier and wanted to have a chance to kill him.
Once upon a time, Emperor Wen, Cao Pi, forced his younger brother Cao Zhi to compose a poem within the time of walking 7 steps, otherwise he would be killed by his the emperor Cao Pi. After receiving the order, Cao Zhi started to walk and at the same time chant his poem:
To cook beans as gravy, filter the gravy into soup.
Under the pot, there is the burning material by the dry and shrunken beanstalk.
While in the pot, there are the weeping beans.
The beanstalk and the bean are originally growing from the same root.
Why should a sibling fried the other so rush?
As Cao Zhi was persecuted about their fratricidal strife, therefore he intentionally took advantage of the poem to satirize his elder brother Cao Pi, and hoped that Cao Pi might be apprehended. In the poem the beanstalk and bean, each of them is a part of the same root that indicated that Cao Pi and Cao Zhi are delivered from the same parents. And they shouldn’t be persecuted each other.
