成語：疾風勁草（JI FENG JING CAO）: strong storms test the sturdiness of grass; only the toughest grass can stand strong winds; adversity is the best testing ground for moral stamina; adversity tries a friend; hardy grass in the storm, it is crucial hours that a man can be tested; only by putting people to an acid test can one determine their true worth; only in times of storm and stress can be told how sturdy one’s piety, integrity etc.; sturdy grass withstands high (strong) winds; the force of the wind tests the strength of the grass—strength of character is tested in a crisis; the strong wind reveals the strength of the grass; the tough grass would not yield to strong winds; sturdy grass withstands high wind, true gold stands the test of fire（疾風知勁草，烈火見真金）。

釋義：此成語多用於正面。凡艱苦中繼續奮鬥，患難中不改志節，貧困時不離棄親友者，都可比喻為勁草。在狂風暴雨中經得起考驗。即孟子所言：富貴不能淫，貧賤不能移，威武不能屈，為大丈夫也。它不能用於負面。為非作歹之人雖然經過艱難困苦，也不能說是疾風勁草。
故事：公元一世紀初，各地農民紛紛發動武裝起義，反抗王莽的苛政。漢朝皇族劉秀，後來的東漢開國皇帝，趁此混亂機會招兵買馬，準備奪取皇位。當劉秀行軍至潁川地區時，當地一位青年名王霸者和他的幾十個朋友投效劉秀。以後，王霸跟著劉秀南征北戰並打了不少勝仗，故甚獲劉秀的信任，視為心腹幹部。可是，當劉秀攻入河北地區時，戰況不利劉秀，甚至腳跟都站不穩。起初和王霸一起參加劉秀的那幾十個人都悄悄地逃跑了，只有王霸一個人仍然忠心耿耿的跟著劉秀作戰。劉秀被王霸的忠誠所感動，不禁感慨地說，“潁川從我者皆逝，而子獨留努力，疾風知勁草也。”
用法：文天祥守揚州至死不屈，真乃“疾風勁草”板蕩忠臣也！
故事英譯：At the beginning of the first century, numerous farmers of everywhere in China got up with taking their weapons to fight against the crucial administration of Emperor Wang Mang. Liu Xiu, the royal kin and the founding father of East Han afterward, took the advantage of the chaos opportunity to recruit soldiers and bought horses for overthrowing Wang Mang’s government and seized the post of throne. When Liu Xiu marched through Ying Chuan Area, a local youth named Wang Ba and his two dozen friends joined Liu Xiu’s group willingly. Afterward, Wang Ba followed Liu Xiu to fight North and South on many wars and won many battles, so he was trusted as a loyal comrade by Leader Liu Xiu. However, when Liu Xiu invaded into He Bei territory his warfare was encountered in adversity, even his base camp was on the verge of collapse. All those two dozens of men who followed Wang Ba together to participate Liu Xiu’s group ran away stealthily; only Wang Ba singly still loyally followed Liu Xiu to fight against the enemies. Liu Xiu was truly moved by Wang Ba’s loyalty, so said with emotion, “Those who followed me in Ying Chuan all ran away, only you singly was engaging in my revolution, truly only the sturdy grass withstands the strong storms.”
