(YU GAI MI ZHANG):the more one tries to hide, the more one is exposed; he who excuses himself accuses himself; one exposes himself unwittingly while trying to cover up his tricks; the harder one tries to conceal thing the more it attracts attention; the more concealed the more conspicuous;one who tries cover up ( a secret , plot etc. ) the better-known it will become.
In the 31rst year of Duke Zhao of Kingdom Lu during the Era of Spring and Autumn, Governor Hei Gong of Dukedom Zhu gave stealthily Lan County of Zhu ( Teng County, Shan Dong, today) to Kingdom Lu, for the purpose that the ruler of Kingdom Lu let him have a political refuge in Lu. However, Kingdom Lu was a country of practicing etiquette and justice strictly because the people of Lu were Duke Zhou’s descendants, and Duke Zhou was the person who was making etiquette and music for Zhou Dynasty; so in Kingdom Lu’s annals, there was a record of the event that Governor Hei Gong had been a fugitive in Lu. Lu’s gentlemen judged the event and said, “One should protect one’s name carefully, never let one’s name be stained with stigma. The quilts of those who sold their cities or lands stealthily to foreigners should be recorded in the national annals, and those would become the persons of unrighteousness forever; and their crimes could not be removed away eternally. Oddly somebodies who wanted their names being appeared in the annals, anyway their names can’t be seen in the chronicles; while somebodies don’t want their names being seen in the chronicles, but their names always be written in the chronicles. ”
