成語：創業維艱（CHUANG YE WEI JIAN）：to found a business is hard; to start an entrepreneur is hard; to establish a business is very difficult; it’s very difficult to set up an undertaking; to initiate a business is difficult; to venture an event is hard.
出處：唐太宗李世民的故事。
釋義：此成語往往與“守成不易”連用。要創立一番大事業，非經過千辛萬苦不為功。但是，要想維持事業興旺更不容易。
故事：唐太宗李世民自幼即天資聰穎，決斷迅速而正確。隋末時期，天下大亂。太宗勸他父親高祖李淵興兵爭奪天下。高祖同意，即發兵從事於國家統一大業。經過長時間的奮鬥，終於征服了各路兵馬統一全國。太宗登基為皇帝後，銳意革新行政，去除奢侈生活，減輕賦稅，寬鬆刑法，加強軍力。在中國歷史上成為一代最英明的皇帝之一。
有一天，太宗問群臣說，“創業和守成哪一個困難？”忠臣房玄齡說，“陛下開始冒險從事於國家統一大業時，四方諸侯起兵，各據一方。陛下遭遇大小戰事不下數百次，終於降伏了他們，而統一了全國，臣確實認為創業應該是更困難。”諫臣魏徵點頭，然後說，“自古來，帝王完成帝國大業，必須經過千辛萬苦，可是，到頭來他們卻失去所有，因為貪圖奢侈生活。所以我認為如何保持他們的既得才是真正的困難。”聽了他們的陳述，太宗結論說，“玄齡跟著我打天下出生入死，經過大小數百戰，所以他說創業比較困難，這是可以理解的。現在我們已經創建了唐朝，魏徵盡力幫我安定天下，並使之昌盛。現在，我認為一個人變為富有，就會享受奢侈的生活；一旦享受奢侈的生活，就會傲慢起來；然後變為懶散，不再努力；最後必然失去所有的一切。所以，雖然說創業非常不容易，但是，守成更為困難。”他接著說，“我們創業已經完成，創業的困難已經過去了。目前，如何守成，並使國家昌旺，我和你們都要鼓起勇氣，努力奮進，直到永遠。”
用法：俗話說“好的開始是成功的一半”，又說“凡事頭三腳難踢”，這都說明“創業維艱”。
故事英譯：Tai Zong of Tang ( Li Shi Min) was endowed with unusual intelligence since his childhood and could make a correct decision bravely and quickly. In the last years of Sui Dynasty, the country had been fallen in serious chaos. Tai Zong exhorted his father Gao Zu (Li Yuan) raised army to fight for the throne. Gao Zu agreed and started to venture the country-unified career. After a long time of efforts, finally they conquered all enemies and unified the whole country. After ascending the throne, Tai Zong forged plans to innovate the governance, removing luxury life, reducing duties, and strengthening military power. At last， Tai Zong Li Shi Min became one of the most intelligent and brilliant emperor in China history.
Once upon a time, Emperor Tai Zong asked his courtiers, “Which one is harder between starting a business and maintaining the achievement successfully?” A royal courtier named Fang Xuan Ling said, “When Your Majesty started the great venture of unified the country, there were lots of warlords also raised troops from all directions and occupied all sides. Your Majesty encountered hundreds of engagements, finally subjected them, and made the whole unified successfully. I do think that to venture a great event should be more difficult. ” Advising courtier Wei Zheng nodded and said, “Since old times, kings and emperors who completed their imperial careers had to experience lots of hard times, but afterward, they would lose what they gained because of desiring luxury life. Therefore, I think how to maintain the possession is really difficult.” After hearing their opinions, Tai Zong concluded and said, “(Fang) Xuan Ling followed me to go through fire and water, experienced more than one hundred of various battles, so it’s reasonable to say that establishing a business is more difficult. Now, I’ve set up Tang Dynasty, Wei Zheng does his best to help me to keep my reign stable and prosperous; in the meantime, I think that one who once becomes the rich would enjoy luxurious life, and once he sinks in the affluent and lordly life, he would be lazy, no more working hard, finally he must lose all his gain. As a result, although to get a business successful is not easy, but to maintain the achievement is more difficult.” He continued his saying,“ Our great event has been finished, and the hard times had been passed over, nowadays, the difficulty how to keep our achievements stable and prosperous, you and I should muster all of our courage to do our best till eternality.”
