傾筐倒篋

成語:傾筐倒篋(QING KUANG DAO QIE): to exhaust all one has to help; to give all one’s to help; to empty one’s purse to help; to give generous financial support to those who need; to ransack boxes and chests; to try one’s best to help; to empty the coffers to assist others;to give one’s all including treasury and knowledge to help others.
出處:晉書,郤鑒傳。
釋義:是一個正面成語;把自己所有的一切包括錢財和知識,對需要者傾囊相助。
故事:晉朝太尉郤鑒有一個可愛美麗的女兒,是郤鑒的掌上明珠,郤鑒對她寵愛有加。當她長到二八佳人適婚年齡時,他一心想找一位乘龍快婿。郤鑒聽到司徒王導家的兒子和侄子們都受過良好教育,便派一個學生到王導家去為女兒做媒,他告訴王導說郤鑒想在他的兒子或侄兒中選一位最好的作為他的女婿。王導讓他到東廂房裡去自己選一個;王家青少年都住在東廂房。那個媒人到了東廂房,但是,無法作決定。他回家將王家所見情況向郤鑒報告。他說,“王導家的幾個少年都很好,當他們聽說我要從他們中間為你選一位作女婿時,他們都接近我,裝模作樣,想讓我看到他們的才華,只有一個例外,他坦腹躺在床上吃東西,好似不在乎選女婿這件事;自由自在地吃東西。”
郤鑒一邊聽,一邊想,突然高興地說,“這正是我的好女婿!”郤鑒仍然不放心,所以他親自到王家去看那位坦腹的少年。他仔細觀察之後非常滿意。然後就把女兒嫁給該少年。那個少年就是王導的侄子,大名鼎鼎的書法家王羲之。郤小姐出嫁後住在王家。有一天她回娘家時,告訴她兩個弟弟說,“王家的人看見謝安、謝萬來訪,就傾筐倒篋地將好的食物拿出來招待客人。”後人根據她這番話演變為“傾筐倒篋”此一成語。
用法:多年不見的朋友,突然來向我求助,說想借一點錢買車票,因為錢包被扒了。事後必然盡快歸還。我不疑有他,就“傾筐倒篋”幫助他,熟料,他竟然是個騙子,還騙了不少老同學。
故事英譯:Xi Jian, the Minister of National Defense of Kingdom Jin, had a beloved beautiful daughter, who was the apple of Xi Jian’s eye. Xi Jian loved his daughter very much and when she grew up to a late teenager, he urgently wanted to look for a nice youth for her husband.
Xi Jian heard that there were several educated youths in Wang Dao’s family, who was the Minister of Domestic Affairs of Jin. One day, Xi Jian sent a student as a matchmaker to visit Wang Dao and the student told Wang Dao that Xi Jian had a beloved daughter and would like to choose the best one among his sons or nephews to be his son-in-law. Wang Dao let the messenger-student himself to go to the east chamber to select one from them, all the youths lived there. In the meantime, the matchmaker arrived at the east chamber but he couldn’t make a decision, and returned home to report the situation he saw at Wang Dao’s family to Xi Jian, he said, “The several youths in Wang Dao’s family are all very smart. When they heard that I’d come to choose one from them for being your son-in-law, they all approached me, showed with affectations, desiring to let me see their talents, except one, who lay on a bed with a bare belly, seemed that he ignored the affair of selecting a son-in-law by you; and was eating snacks freely. ”
Xi Jian was considering as he was listening, all of a sudden, he said joyfully, “This is just my best son-in-law!” But he was still worried about it, so he himself went to Wang’s house to see the youth who lay the bed in Wang’s east chamber, and after watching carefully he felt very satisfied. Then he had his daughter marry the youth. The youth was Wang Dao’s nephew named Wang Xi Zhi, the well-known great calligrapher. Miss Xi married Wang Xi Zhi and lived in Wang’s family. Someday when she returned her parents’ home, she told her two younger brothers, she said, “When Wang’s families saw Mr. Xie An and Xie Wan dropped on, they emptied the boxes and cupboards taking out all their best delicious food to treat Xies. Afterward, according her such words, this idiom was derived –exhaust all one’s have to help the need.
